DAVID A. WILKIE

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our loving husband and father, Mr. David Allan Wilkie, age 68 years, on Friday, October 12, 2018.

David was born in Fort William on November 27, 1949. He met the love of his life, Lorraine Thomas in high school, and they were married August 10, 1974. Family was everything to David and he was very proud of his wife Lorraine and daughter Anne-Marie. “Cookie/Cook,” as he was affectionately known, due to his love of cookies, grew up in Westfort and attended local grade schools, graduating from Westgate Collegiate. He completed his schooling at Lakehead University, graduating with a diploma in Electrical Engineering. David's first job was with the Government of Canada at the Communications Canada Monitoring Station and then moved to the main office. Upon its reorganization, he spent a year in the Electrical Engineering Labs at Lakehead University. Although he enjoyed his job, he was offered a new position at TbayTel and joined them in 1980. Very dedicated and loyal to his employer, David loved going to work and spending time with his colleagues. Until his passing, David was a Regulatory Analyst in the Finance Department.

David began with the Militia as a Private at the age of 16. He continued his commitment throughout the years, working his way up the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel Commanding Officer of Lake Superior Scottish Regiment (LSSR). He was most recently the LSSR Senate Chair.

Sports were always a big part of David's life. When he was younger, he was active in athletics. He played on an all star baseball team, played junior football in high school and spent time with the Westfort Maroons Hockey Club. He was part of the Engineering Hockey Club at Lakehead University and a member of the Rowing Club and Meter Eaters Running Club. David was part of the coaching staff for the Senior football team at PACI. Since 1990, he was part of a pickup Wednesday night hockey group at Grandview Arena and even took on the role of organizer in more recent years. He was also a member of the Chapple's Men's Golf Club. David was an avid fan of the Montreal Canadiens, Oakland Raiders (always cheered for the underdog) and a big fan and season ticket holder for the Lakehead University Thunderwolves.

David's interests included reading, most notably Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler, collecting ties, woodworking and especially cooking and baking. He was famous for his caesar salad and salmon. David also loved spending time at the family camp on East Loon Lake.

He was very involved in the community. David was a long-time member of Holy Family and St. Elizabeth's Parishes and was dedicated to many ministries, especially the Music Ministry. David was a member of Cursillo Thunder Bay, a facilitator for Marriage Prep through the Diocese of Thunder Bay, long-time member of the Kakabeka Legion and a member of a Saturday morning coffee group at A&W.

David truly had a zest for life, was unique and very talented. He was a kind man and was young at heart. He will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends.

David will lovingly be remembered by his wife Lorraine; daughter Anne-Marie (Pietro Oppedisano); brother Richard (Susan); sisters-in-law Evelyn Kemp and Carolyn (Ray) Syvitski; nieces Loralee, Heather (Gene) and nephews Raymond (Elke), James, Adam and Grant (Leslie) as well as great-niece Noemi and great-nephews Daniel, Truen and Sebastian.

He was predeceased by his parents, William and Katy Wilkie; sister Anne (in infancy); in-laws Harry and Mary Thomas; sister-in-law Isabel Kavanaugh and brothers-in-law Andrew Kavanaugh and Alexander Kemp.

Funeral Services for the late Mr. David Wilkie will be held on Friday, October 19, 2018 at 10:00am in Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, with the Funeral Mass celebrated by Father Rey Ronquillo. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday evening after 5:00pm in the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, with Vigil Prayers offered at 7:00pm.

Should friends so desire, donations made in memory of David to the Holy Family Church Renovation Fund or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
