Beverley Joan (Bev) Bishop of Thunder Bay, Ontario, passed away on November 13, 2018 at the age of 89. She was the beloved wife of Robert (Bob) Bishop who passed away in 1997. After an amazing life journey she has now joined our Dad, as they follow the stars together.

Born April 7, 1929, into the land of endless horizons, Moose Jaw, Sask., during a time of great Global turmoil, she chose service to all of God’s creatures, selecting a career as a graduate nurse, putting the needs of others first. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1950 from Saskatoon City Hospital, School of Nursing. Her career would span the next 5 decades working in hospitals in Calgary, Edmonton, Peterborough, Winnipeg, Sault Ste Marie and Thunder Bay. Most of her career was spent at the Port Arthur General Hospital where she retired from nursing in the early 90’s. She was the last nurse on her ward to wear the traditional nurse’s cap.

Music became an expression of her beliefs and a pathway for her ties to her surroundings. As a member of the United Church she supported many church activities.

She participated in many sports. Ice dancing and speedskating were two of her passionate favourites, as she shared with us her joy of listening to the sound of the blades as they carved their way through the new crisp ice, canoeing, walking and swimming where she loved the silence and the freedom of weightlessness. She was an active member of both the Thunder Bay Astronomy and Field Naturalist groups and joined in group star gazing, educational display gatherings, bird counts, and song recognition. Her skill and passion of sewing came in handy as she made her own clothes, clothes for her growing children and was up to the task of bigger projects as she tackled the tent for Dad’s new home built tent trailer. Other activities she delighted in were quilting, cake decorating, gardening, crafting, camping, and always challenging those around her to play fair and attain personal goals. Bev also was an avid volunteer for various church activities (Couples Club), Thunder Bay Triathlon, and YMCA (Camp Carson Cross).

Always seeking knowledge, with maps to share, things to see and do, researching holiday visits, Bev had a vision for sharing ideas with gentle guidance to others in her family, nursing, clubs and social gatherings.

Mom was a lifelong learner taking courses to upgrade her nursing, automotive mechanics so she understood what her boys where talking about at the dinner table, bible studies, typing classes and Astronomy. In her 70’s mom learned how to use the computer because that was the new way of communicating with family and friends and learning about every topic imaginable.

Family moments were treasured, sharing in joy, laughter, guidance, challenges, and very proud of the individual directions and accomplishments of her children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was the constant giver of encouragement, support and communicator to us all, be it individually, by phone, mail, email, and Facetime. Distance was a challenge, but we always knew that Mom was cheering us on to do our best. Her delight was ours!

Bev is survived by her children Coralee (Don Roy), David (Sirpa), Kenneth (Ellen), Thomas (Debra), and Doug. She will be missed by 10 Grandchildren and 7 Great-Grandchildren and her special friend and companion Ken Moffatt. Bev is also survived by her brother, Bob Beamish (Nancy) Calgary, sister Nancy Gray (Barry) and many nieces and nephews.
