Obituary for Mr. Arthur "Art" Lauri Jarva

ARTHUR L. JARVA

Arthur (Art) Lauri Jarva passed away peacefully in St. Joseph’s Hospice on March 8, 2021, after a lengthy illness.

Arthur was born in St. Joseph’s Hospital on September 23, 1939. He attended St. James Street School and Hillcrest High School. He did not stray far from his roots, residing in the home his grandfather built. Art worked part time throughout high school to augment the family income after his father’s death. He started driving at age fourteen in order to sell the remaining lumber, equipment and trucks from his father’s lumber business.

Art began working for Doran’s Brewery in the retail store and then transferred to the soft drink division. He worked there in various positions for thirty three years, through changes in ownership including an employee buyout, ending his career as a Pepsi Representative. Arthur's favourite pastimes were camping and fishing. He was a founding member of The Voyageur Fish Club and he enjoyed time spent at Bewag Lake. Art was interested in the history of Thunder Bay, World War Two and Finland. In later years he developed an interest in genealogy, particularly his Jarva family tree. Arthur was a member of the Suomi Foundation.

After retirement, Art enjoyed travelling. Most memorable was a trip to Finland for a family reunion where he renewed acquaintances with some cousins and met many others for the first time. He also enjoyed Caribbean cruises. Art enjoyed chatting and could strike up a conversation with friends, relatives and strangers.

Arthur is survived by his wife, Gloria, his daughters Laurette and Janelle and his two very special grandchildren, Mara and Ronan; his brother George, his sister Gloria (Leslie) and his niece Debbie and nephew David (Christina) as well as many other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Raymond (Ruth) and sister-in-law Marjorie and his Goddaughter, Heidi Nelson. Art was close to his cousins and many friends, some of whom have predeceased him.

He was predeceased by his father, Lauri and mother Lempi Helen Jarva (nee Lehtinen). Also, predeceased by mother and father-in-law, John and Marie Wilson, three brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-laws and close cousins and their spouses.

Arthur has been cremated and a Celebration of Life and interment of ashes will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Salvation Army, the Alzheimer’s Society, Canadian Hearing Services or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.
