Obituary for Mr. John Urias Davies

Mr. John Urias Davies, age 93 years, passed away peacefully in Hogarth-Riverview Manor on Friday, April 9, 2021.

John was born in Bynea, Wales on April 19, 1927. He obtained his apprenticeship in Electric Welding in 1942 and was deemed an essential to the war effort welding equipment and munitions during World War II.  John was admitted to the Bible Training Institute of the Glasgow United Evangelistic Association in 1948.  He was an attendee at The Missionary School of Medicine in London, England in preparation for Missionary work.  John immigrated to Canada in 1954 settling in Dundas near Toronto. He studied Theology at McMaster University and preached at many Baptist churches throughout southern Ontario. John met the love of his life, Jeanne, at the Broadway-First Baptist Church in Winnipeg and they were married on December 8, 1959 in Scarborough, Ontario.  They moved to Fort William where he took the position as full time pastor at the Slate River Baptist Church.  After retiring from the ministry, he continued his welding career in a teaching capacity at the Thunder Bay Correctional Facility from January 1, 1965 and taught Welding for Sheet Metal Workers at Confederation College in 1975. He obtained his Ontario Teachers Certificate in 1979 studying at Lakehead University and the University of Toronto.  He retired June 30, 1992 after 27 years of teaching welding.

John loved the sport of rugby and his beloved Llanelli Scarlets.  He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, working on his John Deeretractor, and tinkering in the garage.  John also enjoyed gardening, welding, and working on his latest invention.  John loved music and his record player and then later in life his CD player was never far from his side.  Dogs were spoiled companions for many years, until late in life, and there were many special ones along the way.

John is survived by his children Ian (Yvonne Thevenot), Eleanor, Darren (Sandy), Mairianna Davies (Tim Naismith) and Sharron (Rick, Jayson, Sherry) Flatt; grandchildren Jessica (Michael Kovacs) and Kyle Bannon, Shawna and Gabriella Laidler and Jacob and Sarah Davies and great granddaughter Mackenzie Bannon-Kovacs. His kindness, hospitality and dry sense of humour brightened our family celebrations, and he always would celebrate with a heartfelt message of gratitude for the goodness of life and family.

He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Jeanne; and parents.

Private funeral services will take place and interment will be held in Mountain View Cemetery. Arrangements are in care of WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James.

If friends desire, donations in memory of John to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario would be appreciated.
