Obituary for Mrs. Antonia "Mary" Zuliani

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Antonia Maria “Mary” Zuliani (nee Ruzic), who died peacefully at the Roseview Manor on November 23, 2022.

Mary as she was commonly referred to, was born in Ruzic, Yugoslavia (Croatia) on June 11, 1926. Mary, with husband Stephan and young daughter Alice immigrated to Canada in 1951 and settled in Beardmore, Ontario, with literally only the clothes on their back. Their son Sergio was born later. Mom worked at the Red Cross Hospital until they bought the Maple Leaf Restaurant, which they operated from 1959 until 1975. After moving to Thunder Bay in 1975, Mom continued her passion for cooking whether it was in a business or for her family, friends and neighbours. A naturally gifted cook and baker, it was a handful of this or a handful of that. The recipes were only in her head. You never left the table hungry.

In Thunder Bay, Mom lived on Ray Blvd for many years, making many lifelong friends. From there she moved to the PR Cook Apartments, where she embraced a whole new social world, loving every minute of it. For the past two years, Roseview Manor was her home. Mom was very fond of all the staff there. They treated her like family and took such good care of her.

She was a devoted member of Corpus Christi Church and a proud member of the CWL, often assisting with functions.

She is survived by her daughter Alice Reguly (John) of Thunder Bay and her son Sergio Zuliani (Janice) of Calgary. Her grandchildren: David Reguly (Kristin) of Calgary and their children Andrew, Kaitlyn, and Keith; Paula Reguly of Chilliwack, BC; Brian Reguly (Nadine Gagnon) of Chilliwack, BC and their children Matthew and Aimee; Stephen Zuliani of Calgary; Sarah Zuliani (Adam Perry) of Calgary; and Theresa Zuliani (Rosh Wadhwa) of Calgary. She was so proud to be a grandma and great-grandma. Also survived by her sister Albina Zgaljardic (Daniel) of New York; niece Laura Novacic of Thunder Bay; and other relatives in Montreal, New York, and Croatia.

Predeceased by her husband Stephan in 2006; her parents and her two brothers, Cesare and Josip, all of whom lived in Croatia.

Mom was a generous and caring person who was dedicated to her family and friends. She always put her family and friends ahead of herself. We were fortunate to have had her with us for such a long time.

Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Mary Zuliani will be held on Thursday December 1, 2022 with family and friends gathering in Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 10:30am celebrated by Fr Victor DeGagne. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to service time.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Corpus Christi Building Fund, St. Joseph Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
